How should the alcohol be stored so that it is still enjoyable to drink after a while? The following tips will help you store alcohol in a storage unit.

1. Store Wine Or Gulp It Down?

It depends. On the one hand, on the quality of the wine. But also on the wine stopper, for example. Not every wine is suitable for storage. As a rule of thumb, the higher the alcohol, acidity, or sweetness, the longer you can enjoy this wine. Pronounced tannins also provide good storage potential.

Many white wines or rosés are made to be drunk within two years of harvesting, as long as they are fresh. The style and development of wine are, therefore, also an essential factor. However, you can keep a Chardonnay that has matured in barriques for months. A light Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, tastes best when young.

2. Standing Or Lying: How And Where Should You Store Your Alcohol?

Wines with corks are best stored lying down, and it doesn’t matter with bottles with screw caps. A constant temperature is more critical. The ideal place to store wines is also dark, vibration-free, and not too dry—ideal humidity: 50 to 75 percent.

Wine racks made of oak are more suitable than those made of metal, possibly rust. Also useful: lava or tuff stones. A wine climate cabinet, which is available in many variants, is chic and practical at the same time. Often with different temperature zones in which the wines are stored at drinking temperature.

Wines are ideally stored at a temperature between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. A little cooler is not a problem as long as the room remains frost-free. However, heat and wine do not go well together. The warmer it gets at the storage location, the faster the wine matures – more than 20 degrees.

Celsius is a knockout criterion for every crop in the long run. Wines are also sensitive to too much light. It has been proven that the sun’s UV rays trigger chemical reactions in wine. This becomes visible after a white, which with whites gets an unsightly yellow tint to brown. Red wines are fading.

The winemaker struggles for a whole year in the vineyard and cellar – and then: does a cork gourmet ruin everything? Unfortunately, this happens sometimes. Nevertheless, for many wine fans, the natural cork as a wine stopper is still sacred.

Since this became established as a wine bottle stopper in the 17th century, few connoisseurs have associated a certain quality with cork.

Its advantages are also undisputed: gas-tight, elastic, yet the wine can develop in the bottle. An excellent natural cork can easily withstand ten or twenty years under ideal conditions.

In reality, quality often looks different today: every tenth wine with a standard cork stopper is corked. The problem is that the cork oak’s bark is not available in unlimited quantities as a natural resource.

High-quality cork is still the right choice for wines supposed to mature in the bottle, but they are rare and expensive. Inferior material such as press corks brought the closure more and more into disrepute.

5. Cork Alternatives: What Good Are Plastic Stoppers Or Screw Caps?

Plastic corks are not suitable for more extended storage. It is controversial whether the wine aromas absorb the polyethylene contained. Plastic pins have proven their worth mainly for inexpensive white wines that are gulped down.
